Planning an Interactive Town Meeting Linking Citizens with Community Organizations

Modern American communities are complex – as are the problems they face. So, conventional methods often fail to solve those problems in ways the entire community can accept. But if all segments of the community are actively involved in searching for solutions, a community's conflicts can be turned into agreements that win wide public support. The Democracy 2000 Civic Engagement Project is grounded in three principles: · All citizens can contribute ideas, energy and action. · Proposals for improving a community are far more likely to be accepted if most citizens have a role in shaping them. · The most effective way to capitalize on citizens' energy is to gather together representatives, each of whom accurately represents a segment of the community. We call our approach "Interactive Representation" IR:
